Topic: Pregnancy News - Mum’s vitamin D levels during pregnancy may affect baby’s dental health (New Kerala)

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Mum’s vitamin D levels during pregnancy may affect baby’s dental health @ NewKerala. According to the study, low maternal vitamin D levels during pregnancy may affect primary tooth calcification, leading to enamel defects, which are a risk factor for early-childhood tooth decay. Vitamin D concentrations were related to the frequency of milk consumption and pre-natal vitamin use. Mothers of children with enamel defects had lower, but not significantly different, mean vitamin D concentrations during pregnancy than those of children without defects. However, mothers of children with early-childhood tooth decay had significantly lower vitamin D levels than those whose children were cavity-free. This is the first study to show that maternal vitamin D levels may have an influence on primary teeth and the development of early-childhood tooth decay. read more

Karen Heller: Teen pregnancy as a TV series? (The Philadelphia Inquirer)- Pregnancy News

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

In real life, misguided teens think pregnancy is a wondrous adventure - that is, until they have to care for a baby on a daily basis. Baby moms "A teenage pregnancy immediately turns the odds against mother and baby," says Dayle Steinberg, president of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Young expectant mothers, the poor ones not depicted in Juno or on ABC Family, are more likely to risk unhealthy behavior (smoking, drinking) and less likely to receive prenatal care, putting mother and child at risk. Those 17 knocked-up girls of Gloucester didn’t simply make a pregnancy pact but an agreement that stagnates education, obstructs future career choices, and clogs income. Pregnant teens on television either have parents who briefly disapprove but continue to support them, or else they suffer “convenient” miscarriages, avoiding the topic of abortion so that the program won’t lose advertisers due to right-wing pressure. read more

Pregnancy News - TV fertile ground for teen-pregnancy shows (MSNBC)

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

LOS ANGELES - With teen pregnancy rates on the rise for the first time in more than a decade, two new TV series are gaining attention as they tackle the hot-button issue from very different angles. NBCâs reality show âThe Baby Borrowers,â which debuted last week, is giving teen couples a âScared Straightâ-style introduction to the realities of child rearing, while ABC Familyâs drama âThe Secret Life of the American Teenager,â which premieres Tuesday night, deliberately avoids having a social-message agenda. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professor Jane Brown, who runs the Teen Media Project, said the mediaâs portrayal of teen pregnancy is having an impact that some have dubbed âThe âJunoâ Effect. Hampton said that if her show continued for years it might be viewed as a âcautionary taleâ about teen pregnancy, but she doesnât believe that TV significantly alters teens behavior, regardless of the content.
