But the fact that a harsh debate has broken out among the schools over how to treat the pregnant athlete suggests that no survey is needed. The subsidized student- athlete is essential to a multi-billion-dollar business in the NCAA’s Division I and a lesser factor in Di vision II. In a crude sense, it is first a waste of a school’s investment, al though some schools, the NCAA reports, would sympathetically sus pend the scholarship until the athlete is able to compete again, obvi ously about a year later. A NCAA by-law says a school can reduce or cancel aid to an athlete who is found to have engaged in misconduct, but schools are hardly inclined to call pregnancy a misconduct, in or out of marriage. read more

BEIJING — An agriculture vocational school has decided to scrap a new rule requiring all female students to take pregnancy tests amid concerns the tests would violate the girls’ privacy. SEOUL, South Korea — A South Korean court rejected a plea for the release of Hanwha Group Chairman Seoung Youn Kim , who is jailed on charges of involvement in an assault against six bar workers in Korea. Police say Kim, who heads South Korea’s 12th largest business conglomerate, arranged for gangsters to kidnap and assault six employees of a Seoul bar in revenge for an earlier scuffle between the bar workers and Kim’s son, a student at Yale who was in Korea participating in an exchange program with a local university.
