Pregnancy News - Center fights teen pregnancy (The Republican)

HOLYOKE - Two city women whose work aims to reduce teenage pregnancies told city councilors last night there are programs in place that are working but that more efforts or money are needed. Teschner, executive director of The Care Center on Cabot Street, whose wards are pregnant and parenting teenage girls, said more state money is needed to combat pregnancy in the city. To motivate young girls to stay in school before having kids, Teschner said, adults need to give them “a reason not to get pregnant (or) delay pregnancy,” a better vision for their lives, easy and safe access to birth control, and “really sound sex education. Wells, executive director of curriculum and testing for public schools here, described a “whole kid approach” that includes counseling when students ask for free condoms from school health offices or teen clinics, and numerous after-school and extra-curricular programs. read more
