(Pregnancy News) Interim Analysis of CRINONE Pregnancy Study to Be Published in American Society for Reproductive Medicine Journal (Business Wire via Yahoo! Finance)

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

This ongoing prospective randomized controlled study is evaluating pregnancy rates and successful long-term pregnancies in 400 women treated with CRINONE 8% progesterone vaginal gel versus compounded progesterone intramuscular injections. Patients were randomized to receive CRINONE 8% (n = 105) or IMP (n = 110). Pregnancy rates, implantation rates, and early spontaneous abortion rates were similar in both arms of the study, whereas fewer side effects and greater overall satisfaction were reported by women receiving CRINONE 8%. This study by Brigham and Women’s Hospital is also evaluating patient satisfaction, which is increasingly important given the trend toward patients taking a more active role in deciding their treatment regimens,” stated Robert S. Fertility and Sterility, known as “the red journal,” publishes juried original articles of scientific excellence in clinical and laboratory research relevant to reproductive endocrinology, physiology, immunology, genetics and menopause. (Pregnancy News) Tests To Solve Shark Pregnancy Mystery (CBS News)

Monday, June 25th, 2007

He had been examining the shark, Tidbit, to figure out why she reacted badly to routine sedatives during a physical and died, hours after biting an aquarium curator on the shin. But sharks only breed with sharks of the same species, and there were no male blacktip reef sharks at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach. If the pup’s DNA turns out to contain no contribution from a male shark, this would be the second known case of shark parthenogenesis. Blacktip reef sharks are sensitive to change, so it was standard procedure to give Tidbit a sedative. This time, Tidbit went under the sedation too deeply maybe because of a combination of the unknown pregnancy and the stress of being handled and of having recently been bitten by another shark, George said. read more

Pregnancy News - High Blood Sugar in Pregnancy May Put Baby at Risk (RedNova)

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

CHICAGO — The higher a pregnant woman’s level of blood sugar, the greater the risk to her newborn — whether the mother has diabetes or not, the largest study on the problem suggests. It found a surprisingly strong relationship between the blood sugar levels of the women and the rate of big babies and first- time Caesarean sections, said lead investigator Dr. The newborns also were more likely to have low blood sugar levels and high insulin levels if their mothers’ blood sugar levels were higher. In the study, large babies were born 5 percent of the time to women with the lowest level of fasting blood sugar (less than 75 milligrams per deciliter). read more
