FDA ruling allowing sale of emergency contraceptive to women 18 and older ends contentious approval process. More than four out of five women who participated in the studies had the implants for two years or longer, suggesting that they were satisfied with the birth control method. Exactly one year ago, the FDA approved Implanon, a matchstick-sized implant that delivers a steady dose of the hormone progestin to prevent pregnancy for up to three years. The single-rod delivery system for Implanon is designed to minimize the risk of the removal problems that plagued the first implantable contraceptive to become available in North America, Wyeth Pharmaceutical’s Norplant. Wyeth also market’s a two-rod implantable contraceptive outside the U. The newly published research review, conducted for the independent, health practices analysis group Cochrane Collaboration, found all three implantable contraceptives to be very effective for preventing pregnancy, but there were some differences between them. read more

Photorazzi/David Gabber Katie Holmes has sparked speculation that she is pregnant with her second baby after stepping out in an outfit which appeared to reveal a “bump”. The Batman Begins star set tongues wagging when she arrived at the New York premiere of new film Hairspray in a figure-hugging black dress. Her agent has denied the rumours, but the actress has made it clear that she wants to have another child with husband Tom Cruise. The 28-year-old gave birth to daughter Suri in April last year. Asylum ruling leaves out Chinese spouses (AP via Yahoo! News)(Pregnancy News)

NEW YORK - The husbands of women forced to abort a pregnancy, undergo involuntary sterilization or face persecution under China’s coercive population control program do not automatically qualify for asylum, a federal appeals court ruled Monday. Manhattan conflicts with rulings by several other federal appeals courts. He noted the ruling directly conflicts with a dozen other federal appeals courts as well as the findings of the Board of Immigration Appeals and 10 years of rulings in immigration cases. China’s family planning policy — implemented in the late 1970s — limits most urban couples to one child and families in some rural areas to two to control population growth and conserve natural resources. Human rights activists complain the policy has led to forced abortions, sterilizations and a dangerously imbalanced sex ratio due to a traditional preference for male heirs, which has prompted countless families to abort female fetuses in hopes of getting boys. read more
