The risk of preeclampsia — a serious pregnancy complication — increases five-fold when women are deficient in vitamin D early in pregnancy, the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences reported this morning. Bodnar, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health and lead author of the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, said in a news release. Data were analyzed for 1,198 women enrolled in the Pregnancy Exposures and Preeclampsia Prevention Study. After accounting for known preeclampsia risk factors, such as race, ethnicity and pre-pregnancy body weight, Bodnar found the link between vitamin D deficiency and the five-fold increase in preeclampsia. read more

Pregnancy May Increase The Risk Of Developing Binge Eating Disorder (Science Daily)(Pregnancy News)

Science Daily — Pregnancy may open a window of vulnerability for developing binge eating disorder, especially for women from lower socio-economic situations, according to a study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers and colleagues in Norway. In a long-term study of 100,000 pregnant Norwegian women, the researchers saw an unexpected increase in new incidences of binge eating disorder that began during pregnancy. Previously, small clinical studies had suggested that often eating disorders go into remission during pregnancy, just as some pregnant women spontaneously quit smoking cigarettes. Jordan Distinguished Professor of eating disorders in the department of psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine and the department of nutrition in the UNC School of Public Health. The researchers will follow the impact of eating disorders, especially binge eating, on the women and their children over time. read more
