Pregnancy discrimination claims rising in the workplace (Austin American-Statesman)(Pregnancy News)

Despite the large number of working women and two longstanding federal laws aimed at protecting pregnant women from workplace discrimination, many still find themselves in similar crises as their pregnancies progress. Firings and demotions during pregnancy can be clearcut, but subtler forms of discrimination can exist as well, said Jocelyn Frye, general counsel for the National Partnership for Women & Families. Pregnant women often call Jack Tuckner’s law firm when they discover they’re being forced into a “degraded state,” he said. Women sometimes run up against managers who have different ideas about what pregnant women should or shouldn’t be doing, said Tuckner, partner at Tuckner, Sipser, Weinstock & Sipser, a New York firm that represents women in discrimination cases. read more
