Pregnancy News – Event aims to combat risks of sex (Asheville Citizen-Times)

ASHEVILLE – Navigating adolescence is difficult for mothers and daughters alike, and teaching teenage girls how to avoid dating violence, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases can be daunting for a mother. Shannon Dowler, who works for Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care and organized the event. The report looks at a number of behaviors including eating and exercise habits, tobacco, drug and alcohol use and violent behavior among high school youth. Part of the focus at the event will be to get conversations going between mothers and daughters on difficult topics, and to give accurate, realistic information, Dowler said. The event will include lunch and giveaways including gasoline cards, massages, tickets to the Biltmore Estate and Dollywood and flashlight key chains. Council for Women, said it’s important for mothers to come to the event with their daughters to learn about risk factors they may be unaware of. read more

No matter how much medicine learns about pregnancy, modern myths about diet, the baby’s sex and what causes miscarriages abound. Young’s team had several reasons to question the cereal-eating moms study, but one major red flag was that the researchers asked too many questions in their 133-option diet questionnaire. Modern day pregnancy myths abound among patients with high school sex education classes and some Google researching under their belt. Paulson, chief of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, said he hears the same myths about gender selection year after year.
