Stoppard, Britain’s beloved pregnancy and childbirth expert, has produced a revised edition of her well-known book. She devotes an entire chapter to sex during pregnancy, suggesting sexual positions that may be especially comfortable during pregnancy. Dads will appreciate the third chapter, “Preparing for Fatherhood,” which tells men what to expect during pregnancy and birth, and encourages dads to be engaged with their kids from conception on. The 10 percent of moms who experience postpartum depression will be encouraged by Stoppard’s frank, if brief, discussion of baby blues (rest, exercise, and antidepressants all help, but support from friends and family is crucial, too). Vikram Seth’s novel-in-verse The Golden Gate, published 20 years ago, does little to dispel the notion that Californians march to a decidedly different drummer, one pounding out the rhythms of pop psychology. read more
